The first two weeks of May are the most beautiful in the Urban Oasis Garden. The pink New Dawn roses, fragrant Confederate Jasmine, climbing, orange Joseph’s Coat roses, Wisteria, Peonies, Euphorbia, orange Canna Lilies and the dark purple leaves of the weeping Redbud Tree all work together to make a crazy collage of color and texture.

People always want to know the history of the Urban Oasis. It was a cotton sorting warehouse built in 1950. The railroad tracks ran behind the building and there was a spur line coming down from the tracks for the trains to unload the cotton on the cement loading dock which now after dumping 40 truck loads full of soil as become our backyard and back deck. I bought the entire building in 1998 because I had a software company that needed a bigger space. I converted the front office into our company office and my family lived above the office for a year,  in an apartment that I renovated,  while I built out the back space  to be our home.

I have a shelf full of Orchids in my bathroom and it is one of the small joys in life that they actually come back into bloom a couple of times a year.  For most of the time they are leaves and stems and then when they bloom they make my day.

The Urban Oasis is not usually a Shrimp and Grits and Biscuits kind of place. Often our guests want to conserve their calories for all of the fine Inman Park dining later in the day. During the weekdays, there is always a post full of strong coffee ready by 6:30 AM and we lay out a help- yourself continental breakfast with juice, hard boiled eggs, granola, Greek yogurt, fruit, breads and jam. Sometimes, I make green drinks with kale, lemon, cucumber and green apple. Yum.

But sometimes on the weekends, we roll out the works and cook a big breakfast spread. The weekend of Inman Park Festival was just such a time. On Saturday everyone wanted to eat light and get out to walk around the art booths and go hear music. But Sunday morning we were bushed and it was raining cats and dogs so we all stayed in and had a party. My daughter Amanda was visiting  from Orlando. Friends  Mary Ellen and Woody Garcia were down from the Asheville Area. My sister Linda and her daughter Sarah came over to hang out and Joe Stewardson brought the heritage bacon. We also had Connie Hanscom from Australia staying with us for a couple  of weeks to visit her daughter who lives in the neighborhood.

I got my new Mini on Easter Weekend and really love the Robin’s Egg blue. This little car is zippy and perfect for scooting around the neighborhood and picking up guests from the Marta Station. Inman Park is smack in the middle of great shopping and dining but it is  a 30.00 cab ride from the Airport. If are not going to rent a car we suggest you take the MARTA to the Inman Park Station and we will you up from there. So if you are planning a trip to Atlanta be on the lookout for the Easter Mini.

We have three Basset Hounds and one cat at the Urban Oasis. The dogs and cats are not allowed in the bedrooms and because the loft is so big ( 30 foot ceilings) without a lot of upholstery, most people with allergies are pretty much okay. But one thing we always tell people is, “Don’t pet the cat”. The thing is, Shelly is a big tease. She will come around and rub up against your leg and look at you very seductively, but start petting her and she will yowl at you and tell you in no uncertain terms that you are not to pet her. Her behavior is confusing and I have tried to tell her that it is not very nice to tease the guests but I guess you can’t teach an old cat new tricks.

I guess you could call the design style here at the Urban Oasis, retro-modern. We have pieces by Heywood Wakefield, Sarinen, Herman Miller, Eames, Naguchi and Mies van der Rohe to name a few. But, I love to mix these pieces with things I find at flea markets or our big old farm table that was at our beach house before we sold it.

I have always wanted an Eames Clock and a few years back I bought one but there was a perfect place for it in my Mom’s new house so I gave it to her. Finally, this year I got one for my birthday and found the perfect place for it at the Urban Oasis.

Our neighbor, renowned chef Kevin Rathbun has three restaurants on either side of our building here on Krog Street, Rathbun’s, Kevin Rathbun Steaks and The Krog Bar. Each year in the Spring and Fall Kevin sponsors a charity barbecue. This year the food was from Fox Brother’s one of our local Barbecue greats and music was by local band, Snapperhead.
